Baptisia, commonly known as false indigo, is a hardy perennial with deep green, clover-like leaves and tall spikes of pea-like flowers in blue, white, or yellow. Native to North America, it’s drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. When receiving a Baptisia plant by mail, unpack it right away. If it’s bareroot, soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. If it’s potted, check the soil—water if dry, but don’t overdo it. Plant Baptisia in a sunny spot with room to grow; it can reach 3-4 feet tall and wide. Water regularly during the first season to help establish roots, then water only during extended dry spells. Avoid transplanting once established—Baptisia doesn’t like being moved. With minimal care, it becomes a low-maintenance, long-lived feature in the garden, attracting pollinators and adding structure through the seasons.
