Mary Washington Asparagus is a popular, hardy perennial vegetable, renowned for its robust spears and excellent flavor. This variety, ideal for Zones 3-8, is noted for its resistance to common asparagus diseases such as rust and fusarium wilt. To grow Mary Washington Asparagus successfully, start with one-year-old crowns planted in early spring. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, ensuring a pH between 6.5 to 7.5 for optimal growth. Plant crowns in trenches about 6-8 inches deep, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in rows that are 3-4 feet apart. Cover crowns with 2-3 inches of soil, gradually filling in the trench as the plants grow. Regular watering, especially during the first two years, is crucial for establishing the plants. Fertilize in early spring and again after the harvest season ends. Patience is key, as harvesting typically starts in the third year. Mature plants can produce spears for up to 20 years, making them a long-term investment for any garden.
