Carnations are fragrant, long-lasting flowers with ruffled petals, commonly in shades of pink, red, white, and yellow. To grow them from seeds, start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds in well-draining soil, lightly covering them. Keep the soil moist and in bright, indirect light. Germination takes 2-3 weeks. Once seedlings have a few leaves, transplant outdoors in a sunny spot, spacing them about 12 inches apart. Water regularly and deadhead spent blooms.
