Huacatay, also known as Peruvian black mint, is an aromatic herb from the marigold family, valued for its unique blend of mint, basil, and tarragon flavors. Widely used in Andean cuisine, it enhances sauces, stews, and teas with its distinct, slightly citrusy aroma.
To grow Huacatay, plant seeds in warm, well-drained soil with full sun. Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors in spring. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it thrives with minimal care, tolerating drought and poor soil. Regular harvesting encourages bushy growth. Protect from frost, as it prefers warm temperatures. It repels pests, making it great for companion planting.
